Netherton success at Scottish National Calf Show

Following a great start to the winter calf showing season, the Netherton show team were yet again celebrating at Ingleston, Edinburgh, for the Scottish National Aberdeen-Angus Calf Show held in conjunction with the Royal Highland Winter Fair.

Continuing her winning form from the English National calf Show, Netherton Red Essence H483 won the senior yearling heifer class and then went one better by standing reserve female champion under judge Colin Davidson of the Skaill herd, Orkney.

Red Essence, born December 2008, is by Red DMM Traction 98R and is out of Red Sten Essence 42G. She is proving to be a real hit with pedigree breeders, with many admiring her for length, style and Angus character.

Our other member of the team, the May 2009-born bull calf Netherton Francesco J523 shown expertly by Seonaid, stood second in an incredibly tough junior bull class. Francesco took a first prize at the English National and is by Netherton Ronaldo G424 out of Netherton Frances D323.

Congratulations must also go to the Lascelles family who with Balmachie Ellen Erica J062 they took the overall female champion ahead of us. This is the second time The Moss Florian B284 (link to sire page on website) has bred a female champion at the National Calf Show.

The winner of the commercial Aberdeen-Angus classes also had Netherton blood running through it with George and Aileen McFadzean’s steer Dangerous Drummond being a son of Netherton Figo –congratulations to them.

The other flush picked is out of DMM Miss Essence 147H by Mohnen Dynamite 1356 who was the top selling bull at the Mohnen Angus production sale in 2007 when he sold for $39,000. This bull carries loads of performance with great maternal qualities and we look forward to having calves at Netherton by him in the future.

Netherton Missie J421 - This April calf sired by Netherton Ronaldo now herd sire at Hardlawbank. She is one of the most correct and thickest heifer bred at Netherton and has been a stand out from day one. Her dam is one of our donor cows by The Moss Florian whose daughters have bred so well for us and being out of Netherton Missie A114, the breed’s record priced female when she sold for 30,000gns, so it is no wonder this calf has turned heads this summer.
