Cogent secure semen rights to Netherton Mr Brazilian E377

Aberdeen-Angus EBV giant, Netherton Mr Brazilian E377, is now available from Cogent Breeding.

Transmitting +1.7 calving ease, +32 terminal index and +11 milk, this powerful and correct bull ticks all the boxes – particularly for suckler farmers wanting to breed replacements.

Mr Brazilian hails from one of the best family’s in the breed today. His dam, Netherton Missie A114, is a tremendous brood cow and is the no.2 cow in the breed for Retail Beef Yield. Additionally she holds the record price in the breed at 31,500 when she sold in 2007 and her progeny are also maintaining this high price tag.

His sire, The Moss Florian, has bred two female national calf champions and his sons have sold to 11,000. Florian is also an easy calving sire who transmits high production and perfect udders.

Cogent Beef Specialist, Boomer Birch, says: “Mr Brazilian is as good, if not better than his pedigree predicts. As arguably one of the best bulls in the breed, he uniquely combines exceptional power over his loin with correctness and breed character.

“Both male and female progeny are full of style with exceptional loins and second thigh. His calves are growthy and extremely easy to flesh, which is exactly what the market wants in today’s current climate.”

To take advantage of this breed-leading bull, contact Cogent’s National Beef Breeding Advisor, Gareth Scott on 07584683362 or Cogent’s Beef Specialist,  Boomer Birch on 07901 914160.

William McLaren snr receives the Sir William Young Award

At this year’s Royal Highland Show we were thoroughly delighted that Dad received the Sir William Young Award. The award, given by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, recognises outstanding contribution to livestock breeding and commemorates the service to Scottish agriculture by the late Sir William Young, Skerrington Mains, Hurlford, Kilmarnock.

Here are a few snippets from the speech given by the Chief Executive of the RHAS, Stephen Hutt.

Born at Netherton in 1932, Willie followed his father and grandfather in to breeding Angus cattle in a herd that was founded in 1924 and is the oldest performance recorded in the A-A herd book.

Married to Cathy, they have two sons Duncan and William and two daughters Margaret and Kay. Today, young William is the mantle of the herd and is as passionate and enthusiastic as his dad was at the same age.

In 1973, Willie travelled to Amercia to look at the changes in the size of Angus cattle overseas and in October of the same year he bought two bulls Walnut of Edgely Angus and Wilbar Eston and in 1976 he really put the herd on the map.

At the Royal Show Canadian breeders brought over a two year old heifer Cee-Bar Favourite as a promotion. Willie bought her for 2000gns and she went on to win the Royal Show in 1980 and the RHS in 1981. This cow is the most influential imported animal in the breed and a third of the Netherton herd is descended from her.

From then on imported bulls flowed in to Netherton as Willie travelled the world in search of new genetics. These included Patrick of Breaffy, JRM Canadian Prime, Burthlene Haulin Oats and in 1988 he went back to Canada and bought the famous TLA Northern Samurai at a huge cost of 30,000. This bull was the first to breed all the section champions at the 1997 Perth Bull Sales and his progeny won the Royal Show in 1992, 94, 96, 98 and the highland Show in 1996, 97 and 98.

His pioneering approach has seen him become one of the first breeders to import Aberdeen-Angus embryos and has developed Netherton into one of the world’s most progressive embryo transfer herds.

No stranger to the show ring, the Netherton herd has won the Highland five times and the Royal six times. President of the A-A cattle society on two occasions, Willie has judged at all of the major UK shows and has been the breed society’s ambassador at all World Angus Forums over the last 50 years.

When receiving his award Willie congratulated the RHAS on yet another tremendous show of livestock ad was delighted to see them upholding the traditional means of stock selection, which many breeders use as their criteria for selecting new stock. “That said, I’m not against the use of performance figures and as many of you know I was on the original across breed committee which looked at introducing figures to the UK industry.

“But they are only one tool when choosing new stock. All breeds, including the Aberdeen-Angus, are currently suffering with locomotion problem, so i advise all breeders to pay close attention to legs and feet and ensure the retention of breed character particularly in females.”.

Netherton and Balmachie are pleased to announce that a third share in Netherton Big Edition has been sold so the Saville herd of Stephen and Sarah Medley, North Yorkshire, for a high undisclosed fee. Big Edition calves have been greatly admired by all who have seen them with his group of daughters regarded as one of the best ever produced at Netherton, including Netherton Frances K550, first prize winner at the Stars of the Future Show at Forfar Mart and Netherton Fleur K566, who along with her dam was cow and calf champion at the Winter National Show in Carlisle.

Also making the journey south to the Saville herd is Netherton Beauty H453, a full sister to Big Edition. This two year old heifer has already been in our donor programme and we are looking forward to some HF El Tigre 28U calves from her this year. We have also retained an embryo interest in this superb young female.

First HF El Tigre calves born at Netherton

The first calves of HF El Tigre 28U, the 2009 World Forum champion senior yearling bull, have now been born at Netherton. The four calves are all embryos out of our 2006 National Calf Show female champion Netherton Karama E368. All four were born unassisted and averaged 40kg at birth. These calves had great vigour and got to their feet quickly. We are very pleased with the way they have grown from birth and they are some of the widest topped calves we have had at Netherton.

HF El Tigre 28U was in our minds as a standout bull at the Forum and along with Galawater Angus, we obtained the semen rights for the UK and Ireland. If you’re looking for an easy calving and short gestation bull that leaves calves with loads of flesh and breed character then El Tigre is the bull for you.

Semen is still available from HF El Tigre 28U and is priced at 60/straw. Please contact us or the Galawater herd.
