Netherton herd wins Walker’s Show Herd of the Year two years on the bounce

We’re delighted year’s Walker’s Shortbread Aberdeen-Angus Show herd of the Year title for the second year running, having gathered the most points for showing exhibitor-bred cattle at specific qualifying shows in Scotland, England and Wales.

The show team for us this year has largely been sired by Netherton Big Edition H460 (owned in partnership with Ballathie and Saville) and HF El Tigre, a sire we own the semen rights to with Jim Logan of the Galawater herd.

Integral to our success this year has been Netherton Blackbird K544, a two year old calved heifer who took the breed championship at both Keith and Angus Show as well as a female championship at both the Summer and Winter National Shows.

Another success story in the herd this year has been the bull calf Netherton Big Ben M656. By HF El Tigre he was first, calf champion and reserve male champion at Keith and first and male calf, reserve junior bull and reserve overall calf champion at the Summer National Show in September.

This is the second year running we have won the title since making a major return to the show circuit in 2010 and it also marks the tenth time in total.

Netherton host QMS group visit

Last week saw the Netherton herd spreading the word about high quality Aberdeen-Angus and Scotch beef when we hosted a visit from nine leading international food and drink journalists.

The top food and drink writers from as far afield as Portugal, Italy, Austria, France  and Israel were among the first to see our new state-of-the-art new sheds and cattle handling facilities which are nearing completion with the final work taking place on a reception area at the farm. This area will give guests to the farm an all-weather facility in which to hear more about the combination of tradition and modern technology behind our 87 year old herd.

QMS’ Carol McLaren said many of the journalists had never had the opportunity to see cattle at close quarters before and they made the most of the opportunity to ask the McLaren family questions.

“They were particularly keen to know about what makes the ‘Scotch Beef’ brand special and to hear about the grass-based diet the cattle receive and the natural environment in which they are produced.

“They also took an interest in the welfare aspect of good stock management and in particular they were intrigued by the length of time calves remain with their mothers in the Scottish suckler beef system.”

Netherton Angus exports heifers and a bull to Spain

We’re pleased to announce the private export sale of eight heifers and a bull to the Carrera family from Catalonia, Spain, after the family visited Netherton when they were over at the Stirling Bull Sales in February.

The Carrera family farm on the south face of Pyrenees Mountains where they are establishing a new farm, with the help of the European Welfare Quality TM Project. They have developed the family business through Carrera d'en Bas SL and now run 200 cows and seven bulls. Sourcing of further calves from across the Pyrenees region enables the family to finish 500 cattle a year.

The reason behind the addition of the Aberdeen-Angus cattle is to produce meat with more marbling for sale through their butchery in the Cooperative of Vall d'en Bas, as this is now more of a requirement from their customer base. The plan now is to start their own pure bred herd and use the new stock sire Netherton Mr Administrator K575 over the rest of the commercial herd.

Mr Administrator K575 is a son of the top Australian sire Ardrossan Admiral and is out of one of the top TLA Northern Samuria daughters which is now a foundation cow in the Rull Herd. Mr Administrator was selected for his high marbling figures being in the top 5% of the breed, as well as his easy calving, good growth rates and Terminal Sire Index which place him in the top 15% of the breed. He is also a full brother to the February Stirling sale bull Netherton Mr Admiral, which sold for 10,500 to Threeburnford Angus.

The eight 2011-born heifers are mainly by Netherton Big Edition H460, who is the herd’s senior stock sire, as well as the top Canadian sire HF El Tigre 28U. Six of the heifers are a result of the herd’s ET programme and include two daughters of HF El Tigre; Netherton Beauty L605, who is the much admired heifer calf out of Netherton Big Edition's full sister and Netherton Karama L592, who is a daughter of last year’s show cow who was Breed Champion at Fife and Dunblane Shows before being sold for a five figure price to Saville Angus.

Embryos exported to Luxemburg

We are pleased to announce the private export sale of 25 embryos to Luxembourg through CONVIS, on behalf of Alain Molitor who runs a purebred Limousin commercial herd producing calves to be finished for the CONVIS beef brand. Due to part of his land now being used extensively, for which he gets special subsidies from the Department of the Environment, he has decided to run Aberdeen-Angus.

Reports from CONVIS say many breeders are already having great success with Aberdeen-Angus cattle in Luxembourg and there are now some 25 Angus herds with herd size ranging from 10 to 150 cows.

CONVIS, which is responsible for the maintenance of cattle herd books, performance registration and genetic evaluation and has its own beef brand, purchased embryos from Netherton to establish a herd with alternative bloodlines and higher performance figures.

Included in the shipment are embryos from some of the breed’s leading females with eight embryos from Netherton Fleur G413 who was Winter National Cow Champion last year and has been sold recently for 25,000 to Saville Angus and is by the Ballmachie and Netherton stock bull Netherton Mr Brazilian E377 and seven embryos from Netherton Annie H474, the top performance cow in the Netherton herd by the Genus bull Netherton Rader J527.

The remainder are sired by the Canadian bull HF El Tigre 28U and are out of Netherton Rachel G449, a top daughter of The Moss Mr Eshton D409 and Netherton Beauty J533, a maternal sister to Netherton Big Edition H460.

These embryos have been selected to produce easy calving progeny that will mature into easy fleshed and good maternal cattle capable of suiting their new environment in Luxemburg. We are pleased to be working with CONVIS with this project and look forward to seeing how the progeny perform.
