Netherton wins the Walker’s for the 12th year

We’re delighted to have won the coveted Walker’s Show Herd of the Year competition for the fourth year on the bounce and now 12 times in total.

Our success on both the summer and winter circuit resulted in the team winning the most points with exhibitor bred cattle at specific qualifying shows across the UK.

This year’s team has focussed on all ages, but the most consistent for us has been Netherton Karama K574. She is by Netherton Big Edition H460 who has sired some of the breeds top show females over the last four years and is out of Netherton Karama E368, herself a successful show cow for the herd before being sold for a five-figure price to Saville Angus.

This year Karama won five breed championships and three interbreed championships, ending her show career at The Black Isle Show before being sold as part of the complete herd sale of the adult portion of the herd to HW Angus in the summer.

Also in the team this year having had great success is Netherton Frances M679, Netherton Kelso N768, who was Summer National Show calf champion and Netherton Evita N734, Winter National Show yearling champion. The herd itself competed at 11 shows and picked up 28 first prizes, as well as five breed championships and six interbreed titles.

Netherton announce ground breaking partnership with Highland Wagyu

Netherton Angus are delighted to announce the news of a ground breaking partnership with Mohsin Altajir and his wife Martine Chapman of Highland Wagyu, in the attempt of creating a game-changing Aberdeen-Angus super herd.

In the next five years, beef breeding company Highland Wagyu is set to invest millions into a new Angus super herd, aiming for 1000 head of cattle, in their quest to be at the top of the Angus beef industry and the pedigree-breeding world.

The innovative move includes the private purchase of the majority of the Netherton herd and to run it from both Netherton Farm and Blackford Farms under the guidance of W & D McLaren with the day-to-day running of Highland Wagyu’s Angus herd, which runs under the Mohmar prefix, being carried out by myself. This is a fantastic opportunity for the family and the herd and is made extra special in that we are celebrating our 90th year of breeding angus cattle.

Commenting on this partnership, Mohsin said: “We’ve always recognised the importance of the Aberdeen Angus breed and after long and careful deliberation, we thought the best way forward is to align ourselves with the best and we found that in W & D McLaren and Netherton Angus.

“We already have some of the best Angus foundation females in our 300-strong herd and, with the international know-how of William, the resources and scale of the Highland Wagyu operation, we can build up an elite herd with genetics to cater to the markets and revive the story of Scotland being home to the best beef in the world.

“The dream is to line both sides of the A9 with black cattle from Dunblane to Gleneagles and make Scotland a destination for any Angus buyer in the world.”

George McCulloch will continue to be herd manager for Highland Wagyu’s other breeds, which include 300 head of Fullblood Wagyu, 200 Shorthorns and a fold of Highlanders to convey the Scottish brand. Meanwhile, Netherton itself will retain a number of females and recipients, running the Netherton and Mohmar herds together.

Our family has always embraced innovation, being the first to weigh cattle in 1958 and one of the first to sell an entire adult part of a herd and this is another first with Highland Wagyu. The partnership benefits the Angus breed and the industry to build scale and diversity to breed lines for higher marbling, easy calving and fleshing and to provide both the beef and pedigree breeding that the world needs. It’s breaking new ground to unite the expertise of Netherton and Highland Wagyu in order to produce the best beef in the country.

Hat trick win for Netherton herd in Walker’s Show Herd of the Year

We are delighted to have been awarded the Walker’s Show Herd of the Year for the third consecutive year since we started showing again in 2010.

Having had success on both the summer and winter circuits we accumulated the most points with exhibitor-bred cattle at the qualifying shows across the UK to claim the trophy.

This year’s show team saw a mix of ages with the key member Netherton Frances K550 and her calf Netherton Frances M697. The pair kicked off their season by clinching the breed and interbreed championship at Fife Show, before going on to take the same at Alyth and then the female and reserve overall championship at the Royal Highland Show.

Frances K550 is by the now stock bull at Rull Angus, Netherton Big Edition H460, who has sired many Netherton champions over the past couple of years. No stranger to the show ring Frances has been a prolific winner in the past winning reserve female, junior female and reserve overall junior at the Royal Highland Show in 2012; female, junior and reserve overall at the Summer National Show in the same year, reserve supreme champion Perth Show and reserve yearling champion at the Winter National Show in 2011. She also won the two year old class at last year’s Summer National Show.

Her heifer calf at foot, Netherton Frances M697, sired by Netherton Bionic J535, won the calf championship at New Deer Show and reserve calf champion at the Summer National Show in Perth, before heading in to the winter season to take the reserve yearling championship at the Winter National Show, Carlisle.

In total we picked up 16 first and 9 seconds in 22 classes entered in 2013, with the oldest in the team being just three years old. This win marks the eleventh time Netherton has secured this prestigious award.

We are already looking forward to the 2014 show season and hopefully another strong team, including the recent Stars of the Future senior native champion Netherton Blackbird M712.

Two bulls and a heifer head to Spain

This week saw the fourth shipment of Netherton Angus cattle to Spain where demand for Angus is growing to supply an increasing demand for quality meat in Spain.

The latest sale was of two young bulls and a heifer, both bulls are from easy calving and high marbling lines. Netherton Amigo M704 is a son of Netherton Mr Rader J527 who sold to Genus and his dam is Netherton Annie H474 one of our top donor females before she sold to Sam and Sarah Matchett of the Birches herd.

The Annie family is the highest performance family at Netherton and originates from the great Northline donor cow Southland Awestruck 117R who we believe to be one of the top daughters of the top maternal bull TC Freedom and herself was a show winning heifer in Canada and has bred champion females for Northline.

The other bull is Netherton Eshton M727 a son of the 2010 Royal Highland Show Male Champion and 36,000gns bull The Moss Mr Eshton D409, Eshton is out of the Netherton Big Edition H460 daughter from the Essence family who goes back to Red Sten Essence who was named Canadian show female of the year in 1999 and then as a 10 year old cow in 2007.

Joining them on the journey is the heifer, Netherton Miss Essence M702, she was an imported embryo from the Miller Wilson herd in Canada. Sired by the top US performance sire Mohnen Dynamite, she is out of DMM Miss Essence 147H who has been the dam of many of the winning show cattle for Miller Wilson in Canada.
